| The
Whittier Conservancy From the President |
|
The honor of the presidency
of the Conservancy brings with it much responsibility. For the Conservancy
is the watchdog of the community and issues addressed must be considered
with care, consideration and diplomacy.
Quoting our mission statement “The Whittier Conservancy is committed to the preservation and enhancement of Whittier’s unique quality of life. The conservancy promotes awareness and appreciation of Whittier’s historic, aesthetic and natural resources. The Conservancy works for the preservation and sensitive use of Whittier’s significant residential structures, landmarks and commercial buildings and notable landscapes, including its valuable cultivated trees, public parks and the natural beauty of the Whittier Hills.” In recent years, the Conservancy has played an integral part in the restoration of our beautiful historic depot, in the acquisition of the Union Pacific right-of-way and its development for public use, the preservation of the Whittier Hills and the restoration of the Pio Pico Mansion. We have been instrumental in the preservation of the Ficus (Laurel Fig) trees on Painter Avenue and the development of a new tree ordinance requiring timely notice of intended removal of trees. Currently we are pursuing the beautification of the Norwalk/Beverly Gateway to Whittier and Rose Hills. We will continue to pursue public issues, to encourage and recognize home and business preservation and improvement, and to be your mouthpiece to the City when necessary. Join members of the Conservancy as they participate in Founders’ Day, the Walnut Tree Festival, our Annual Awards Dinner and Candlelight Walk at Christmas time. Should you be aware of a pending problem, please bring it to our attention, as we endeavor to maintain the integrity of this historic Quaker town. With the assistance of an informed and experienced board, I and look forward to a productive year resolving issues of concern with dedication and perseverance. —President Dorothea
